With its length of 46.8 km and an average width of 6.6 km, Korcula is the sixth largest island in the Adriatic Sea. It is a mountainous island (highest point at 560 m) with rugged coastline and densely covered with vegetation. You will find both sandy and pebble beaches and rocky cliffs up to 30m high. The first settlement of Korcula dates to prehistoric times, ancient Greeks named it Black Korčula, because of dark dense stands of pine trees. Venetians as well as Genoese competed for its control with the Croatian kings around 1000 A.D. In 1298 Genoese captured here Marco Polo, who, according to one legend, was born in Korcula.
