Ston

The picturesque historic town, based on settlement of the Romans. They founded "Kastel" fortified camp here, encircled by walls until the year 1000 AD. The current form of walls was created during 14th and 15th century by inhabitants of the Dubrovnik Republic. They are 5 km long, lead from Ston to Mali Ston, have 41 towers and 7 bastions and belong to the most interesting fortification systems in Europe. Ston also offers other attractions, such as the fortress of Veliki Kaštio, St. Blasius neo-Gothic church, Regent's Palace, Bishop's Palace, the St. Nicholas Church with the Franciscan Monastery and salt pans, where salt has been mined from Roman times until today.

The town also offers excellent restaurants.
