Mljet
Mljet, 37 km long island, is located 18 km southeast of Korcula. The western part of the island was pronounced the National Park Mljet in 1960 because of its unique forest habitat.
Specific ocean currents, strong waves and permanent winds shape varied coastline of the island. There are sandy beaches, cliffs, coves and karst valleys with salt water (Big and Small Lake).
The Romans used the island for recreation, as demonstrated by remnants of their villas. In the 12th century Island was given as gift to the Benedictine monks, who founded a monastery in the middle of the lake.
The island can be reached by private boat or by ferry from the peninsula of Peljesac.
